According to researchers and a security guard working at a secret laboratory that researches into how to be happier and live for a long time foraging for wild black berries can apparently help brighten your mood, and at the same time improve your health. Wild blackberries are known to offer health benefits for everything thing from your heart, skin, brain and improve your immune system. Once you have foraged a few hours for the elusive blackas, your brain function will be so improved you might take on the challenge of making from blackberry Jam. Its easier said than done. We have tried at Hairyeyes.
- Blackberries (plenty of), some apples (if borrowed from neighbours tree jam tastes twice as nice), a shovel of Sugar (1kg makes 4 jars), some sterilised jars, some determination, and finally a pinch of good luck, and a squeeze of a lemon.
- 1kg of Blackas will make about 4 X 250 Jars of Jam. Wash the berries to remove any leaves and bugs. Then place into a large pot with a 1kg bag of sugar, and 4 apples peeled and sliced, Squeeze in the lemon and then half it and fire it into the pot too. Stir and boil until all the sugar is dissolved.
- Remove from the heat and pour. The pectin from the apples will set the jam, so you can remove the apples and the lemon. Transfer to some sterilized jars. Cover with a disc of wax paper and fasten the lid.
- Keep in a dark cool cupboard and enjoy until the summer is over in 2018.
At this point in time we couldn’t find any scientific research to say blackberries offer any form of protection for one’s eyes. So if you are taking heed of this valuable advice, and your out foraging for blackas then wear some polarized UV400 protection for your eyes.
